With President Obama’s re-election, the talk of Washington, and all of the cable news channels, is the sudden need for immigration reform. As one pundit concisely explained, Democrats are now willing to work on immigration reform, and Republicans need to work on it (I am paraphrasing a bit).
The writing does appear to be on the wall. The Latino population of the United States is growing, and a major concern of that demographic is immigration, and immigration reform. The voting record shows that the past Republican stance on immigration reform drove the Latino population to vote heavily for President Obama in this election. Moving forward, the Republican party appears to once again want to become the big tent party.
President Obama recently indicated that he would seek immigration reform early in the new year.
Although it seems likely that immigration reform will occur next year – nothing is certain to pass. The current situation reminds me of the great talk of immigration reform that occurred at the beginning of President Bush’s second term. Unfortunately, that talk resulted in nothing. Hopefully this time will be different.
Stay tuned for future updates.
